OUR LIFE-CHANGING HEROES UP CLOSE

The Nation Heritage Institute

What do Ignác Semmelweis, Sára Salkaházi, István Bibó, Zsuzsanna Kossuth, or King Louis II have in common? They were all willing to stand up to anyone and anything when it came to defending their fellow human beings or their homeland. They are the focus of the animated film series Sorsfordítók.

CHALLENGE

In 2022, the National Heritage Institute (NÖRI) approached us with the aim of creating a communication tool that could bring the example and messages of Hungary’s greatest heroes closer to high school students. The goal was to find a format that could make the lives of figures such as Lajos Batthyány, Sára Salkaházi, or Ignác Semmelweis more accessible and even become part of history lessons.

SOLUTION

So far, 20 episodes of the Sorsfordítók series have been completed. Some of the short films highlight figures who played key roles in the Battle of Mohács or in the Revolution and War of Independence of 1848–49, while others bring the shapers of 20th-century Hungarian history closer to viewers. In creating the shorts, we used collage techniques, allowing us to present not only well-known heroes but also the faces of lesser-known historical figures.

Our team also developed several of the Institute’s social media platforms: on its Instagram account, we presented its activities, national and historical memorial sites in an engaging, accessible way, posting regularly about national holidays, memorial days, and events. On the Instagram account of the Fiumei Road Cemetery, we highlighted that the cemetery is far more than a burial site—it is a cultural and historical memorial place worth visiting. Our graphic designers created the visual identity for the Institute’s social media posts as well as the visual framework for the National Remembrance Education Program.

RESULT

The first five episodes of Sorsfordítók were premiered in May 2023 at a special press event, to which several classes from the Piarist High School were invited. Students had the chance to watch the films first and immediately put their new knowledge to use in a special quiz. The series was covered by dozens of media outlets, including 24.hu, Magyar Nemzet, Múlt-Kor, and Kultúra.hu.
